Overview
If you've ever had a night where things went a little too late and you got a little too intoxicated, you know what a hangover is. While all the home remedies in the world will never substitute for less drinking and good hydration, you can do some things that will help to alleviate your discomfort the next day without taking pills.
Step 1
Drink a glass of milk when you wake up. For many people this may not sound appealing, but you will coat your stomach and ultimately this should help keep you from vomiting.
Step 2
If you are feeling like you can keep food down, eat some bread or a roll. In much the same way as milk will coat the stomach, eating bread will help to absorb liquids as you eat it. If you can't eat anything, wait until your stomach has settled for an hour or two and try again to eat some bread.
Step 3
Drink a small amount of beer or other drink. While it may seem counterproductive to drink to cure a hangover, much of your discomfort will be alleviated by introducing a small amount of alcohol to the system. This works in much the same way as using decreasing amounts of a drug to wean drug users off a drug.
Step 4
Rehydrate your body. This is the most important element of curing any hangover. If your body is still lacking the fluids essential for its proper functioning you will not feel better. You can drink either water or any of the sports drinks ending in "ade." Of the main causes of the hangover dehydration and withdrawal are both key. While drinking your water or sports drink you want to sip rather than chug. If you introduce the fluids too quickly they may only increase your nausea.
Step 5
Give your body time to rest. These other measures will help to reduce your nausea but after being deprived of proper functioning your body will need some time to recover.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : If bread goes down fine, try eating a small breakfast. Returning your body to a routine will help get it back on track.
You can't force your body to feel fine by any amount of coffee or wishful thinking.
If you know you are going to be facing a hangover, try to supplement any drinks the night before with water to keep yourself hydrated.
- WARNING : Don't drink so much milk that the lactose actually makes you sicker.
Chugging water or sports drink can make you more nauseated.
Vomiting is a sign of alcohol poisoning. Monitor yourself closely and seek medical assistance if needed.
