Overview
Hangovers are a particularly nasty result of drinking far too much alcohol the night before. Characterized by a pounding headache, nausea, fuzzy mouth and other symptoms that make you want to stay in bed all day, hangovers result when the body attempts to process large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. If you've got a hangover, don't despair. There are numerous remedies available to help you relieve your symptoms and start feeling better.
Step 1
Drink water when you wake up. Alcohol tends to dehydrate you, often resulting in a headache. Drinking water helps restore your body's fluid level and reduces your headache pain. It's also a good idea to drink plenty of water when you are drinking in order to stay dehydrated and decrease your chances of developing a headache.
Step 2
Pour yourself a glass of Gatorade or other sports drink. When you become dehydrated, you also lose electrolytes needed by your body. Sports drinks help replenish the minerals and salts that your body needs and can help you feel better a little sooner.
Step 3
Make yourself a bowl of tasty tripe soup. Tripe, the lining of a cow's stomach, is made into a soup that contains large amounts of garlic and chili. It's more likely that the spices in the soup distract you from your other symptoms than the tripe is actually curing your hangover. Don't have any tripe handy? Try any spicy dish if your stomach can tolerate it.
Step 4
Open up a jar of pickles. Pickle juice and salty snacks like pickled herring help restore electrolytes and make you want to drink more water.
Step 5
Try Alka-Seltzer Morning Relief. This particular type of Alka-Seltzer contains caffeine, which can useful in shrinking the swollen blood vessels that are causing your headache. The water that you mix the Alka-Seltzer in will also help relieve your symptoms.
Step 6
Exercise to help reduce toxins in your body. Exercising is probably the last thing you'll feel like doing if you have a hangover, but aerobic exercise sends increased levels of oxygen through your body, which help break down toxins faster.
Step 7
Peel a banana or make a banana milkshake to calm your stomach. Adding a small amount of honey to the milkshake will help restore sugar levels. Bananas contain potassium and magnesium, which can be lacking in your body after a night of drinking.
Step 8
Take a cold shower. Not only will the cold water help wake you up, it will help break down the toxins remaining in your body from the alcohol. Warm or hot showers only tend to dehydrate you further.
