Overview
Alcohol poisoning occurs when someone drinks large amounts of alcohol quickly. The respiratory system and brain become affected because alcohol acts as a depressant. Alcohol poisoning can lead to death or irreversible brain damage.
Identification
The physical symptoms of alcohol poisoning are unconsciousness; vomiting; cold, clammy, pale or bluish skin; breathing at 8 breaths per minute or less and irregular breathing with 10 seconds or more between breaths and seizures.
Potential
Aspiration of vomit is a danger since alcohol interferes with the gag reflex. People suffering from alcohol poisoning can choke to death on their vomit.
Significance
Alcohol poisoning can cause permanent brain damage. Breathing or the heart can stop. Vomiting can lead to dehydration and seizures, which can lead to brain damage.
Warning
If someone passes out after drinking large amounts of alcohol, do not assume he can sleep it off. Call 911 and stay with the victim. If he begins vomiting while unconscious, roll him onto his stomach with hishead to the side, resting on an arm.
Considerations
Approximately 3,000 people die from alcohol poisoning each year.
