Overview

how engrave pint glass : Overview : Pint glass filled with beer.
Engraving a pint glass can be an easy process, and can be done with the purchase of a Dremel tool. Similar to a hand drill, a Dremel tool rotates bits at extremely high speeds. They are commonly used for engraving wood and glass. Using a Dremel to engrave a glass pint is an easy way to customize and create a keepsake.

Step 1

Attach a stone bit to the Dremel tool. Suspend the Dremel above the work area. Flex-shaft extensions allow for the most control and highest level of detail. Put nonslip vinyl over the work surface to prevent slipping or breaking the glass. Insert a rag into the pint glass to make the engraving more visible.

Step 2

Draw a pattern or design onto the pint glass using a wax crayon. Tracing can also be done by spraying the pint glass with adhesive and pressing the pattern over the glass. Free hand engraving is also an option.

Step 3

Apply an engraving machine lubricant to the outer surface of the pint glass. This reduces friction and can prevent the glass pint from chipping. Slowly bring the Dremel in contact with the pint glass. Try all of the different speeds available on the Dremel to find the one that gives the desired effect.

Step 4

Experiment with old glasses first to become acquainted with the tool before starting on a favorite pint glass. Never push down too hard on the glass or it can shatter.

Step 5

Wipe the glass powder that builds up away from the engraving to better view the work that's been done. Edges and contours will have different effects on the behavior of the Dremel. Be prepared to incorporate unforeseen changes into the design.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : The Dremel tool and stone bit can be purchased at hardware stores, craft and hobby stores, or ordered online. A diamond bit may also be used, if the stone bit cannot be located. Engraving machine lubricant can be found at local hobby and craft stores, or ordered online.
  • WARNING : Always wear a dust mask, safety goggles and ear muffs for safety. Glass powder is toxic and can severely damage the lungs or eyes.
