A black and tan is a popular St. Patrick's Day beverage that consists of mixing a dark and a light beer together. In the U.S. the black and tan tends to be layered whereas in the U.K. they tend to mix the beers together. Depending on where you are, a true black and tan is a 50:50 mix of Guinness Stout and either Bass Ale or Harp Lager. The official Guinness promotional advertising refers to the Guinness/Bass version. he common denominator in a true black and tan is Guinness Stout.

Traditional Black and Tan

Step 1

Fill the 20-oz. glass halfway, with Bass Ale. Tilt the glass to reduce foaming. Let sit to dissipate the foam.

Step 2

Place a tablespoon, convex side up, on the lip of the glass with the spoon part over the center.

Step 3

Slowly pour the Guinness over the spoon. The spoon will keep the Guinness from mixing with the Bass, allowing it to float on top.

Step 4

When the Guinness starts to foam, stop pouring and let the glass sit until the foam settles. When the foam settles, continue pouring over the spoon until the glass is mostly full with about a 1/2 inch to 1 inch layer of foam on top.

Step 5

The finished product should show a clear line of demarcation with a layer of black (Guinness) floating on top of a layer of tan (Bass).
